Queen Anne's Lace ~ Wallpaper
An ode to backroads in the summertime. Oftentimes Mom and I jump in the oldest pickup truck and take off with unhealthy snacks and a mission to find something we haven’t seen before in Osage County. We can drive fast enough to make the roadside queen Anne’s Lace wave in our wake…something we can’t do in one of Dad’s newer more precious trucks. We can get crumbs on the seats that almost sink to the floorboards. We can drive into a creek bed if we get the notion to put our lawn chairs in the water and let the minnows bite our toes. We make lots of stops…like at a house that’s now empty, naked of paint and collapsing…where she tells the story of once helping theinhabitants shuck a pile of sweetcorn as tall as herself in the yard. Another time, my cousin John was fixing fence, up to his knees in Queen Anne’s Lace. While they talked, I sat in a patch of lace and photographed every angle around me under the dappled light of an oak tree. I shared space with the swallowtails and ladybugs and ants and all the buzzing bugs, and time disappeared.
