Fool's Gold
In the Relics series, I use the colors and shapes of single-use plastics as a palette in the camera, transforming what was made to be thrown away into something luminous. These works are meant as quiet markers of a different future: one in which plastics are relics of the past, not agents of harm.
This piece, Fool’s Gold, leans into that tension…where beauty and harm exist in the same shimmer.
Fool’s Gold is presented in three distinct atmospheric states: Gilded, Blush, and Ash. Each state emerges from the same in-camera composition, yet is completed as a final, resolved work. Each is issued as its own limited edition of ten. These are not variations, but separate works—each reflecting a different environmental condition.
•Fool’s Gold - Gilded. The most mineral-rich state of the work, Gilded carries the seductive shimmer of value…warm, luminous and quietly unstable.
•Fool’s Gold - Blush. Softer and more vulnerable in tone, Blush introduces a bodily warmth, suggesting exposure and intimacy beneath the glow.
•Fool’s Gold - Ash. Cooler and more atmospheric, Ash is residue and dispersal…a lingering trace after impact, lightened by distance and time.
Fact: Spider webs have become unwitting collectors of the modern world. Studies show that some webs can contain so many microplastics that up to a tenth of their weight is made up of synthetic particles. It's a haunting marker of just how deeply plastics have infiltrated the environment…down to the finest threads spun by some of the planet’s tiniest inhabitants.
