Burn
In the Relics series, I use the colors and shapes of single-use plastics as a palette in the camera, transforming what was made to be thrown away into something luminous. These works are meant as quiet markers of a different future: one in which plastics are relics of the past, not agents of harm.
Gentle waves of coral, rose, and ember drift upward in Burn, evoking the warmth of fire without its sting. This abstract photograph is created entirely in-camera, using single-use plastics as both subject and medium. Instead of pollution, what if their afterlife was a reminder of resilience, transformation, and beauty?
FACT: Recent studies have found that wildfire smoke carries billions of microplastic particles into the atmosphere, scattering them across landscapes and into our lungs. As fires intensify in a warming climate, plastics—already pervasive in our soil and waterways—are now entering the air we breathe. Soft Burn draws on this unsettling reality, blurring the line between beauty and harm, and reminding us that the legacy of single-use plastics is not only material, but airborne.
